Saturday morning, weather fantastic and a leisurely ride planned at Aston Hill. This was my first ride at Aston Hill, although I am sure I tore around these woods as a kid on my 10 gear racing bike with cow horn handle bars, after all I was born and bred a few miles down the road in Wendover.
Bikes unloaded, off we went to the start of what I was told was a gentle downhill run. Christian aka "Dave" (Bruce's 8 year old son) went first and jumped over what looked like a fairly gentle mound. Next was Bruce and then me. As I looked up, after getting my shoe fixed into the peddle, Bruce was airborne. At this stage I wanted to laugh, how could Bruce have cocked this up ! It was then pretty obvious that something was wrong. Bruce hadn't got up and given a bow to the crowd, and the groaning gave the game away.......... he was hurt.
As I approached him, the first thing I saw was a gash in his leg that was about 4 inches wide and had opened right up...........so that's what muscle looks like ! It was then apparent that Bruce's wrist was also broken. Time for an ambulance.
Bruce spent a couple of days in hospital and arrived back home yesterday (Monday) after an operation to clean and stitch up the leg wound, and plate together his wrist. Pictures of the scars I am sure will be posted by Bruce in the near future.

A whole catalogue of errors brought around the disaster; from not wearinging armour (as we were just going for a quite ride), to ignoring the fact that my cleats were loose, to not doing a first-time 'roll' over the jump...
For those that know Aston Hill it was the first kicker jump on DH3 - I was too fast and as I hit it my right cleat came loose, and as my left foot was leading (and the wheels were in the air) my whole body just fell forward and I landed almost vertical.
The hard surface, with the flint/chalk finish sorted out the rest.
I was in A&E by 11:00, and allowed out Monday afternoon after a 2.5 hour operation, to quote:
"ORIF, AO locking plate" and "distel Radius and Washout debudement and sutures of knee wound"
I'm now pretty mobile, but unable to drive...
Hey Duncan can you publish the pictures as I don't seem to be able
